Since Antiquity, visually unusual beings had been exhibited in public spaces. In the 16th century, street performances involving these beings were organized for the enjoyment of the public.

Later Freak shows featuring a number of ‘monsters’ contributed to the success of travelling shows. For more than a hundred years, the sideshow was to become an indispensable part of American circus culture. Classic attractions of the past included the giant, the fat lady, the midget, the three-legged boy, the armless wonder and the thin man.

105 Sideshows used to exist in the United States alone, but today the business of sideshows has all but disappeared due to public scorn. Until today…..

The Dark Carnival brings you New Jersey's First Traveling Side Show.

Be amazed as you meet the Morbus, the Aquatic Fish Boy. Taken straight from the Atlantic waters off Morocco, Morbus is an exotic, land dwelling fish that one must see to believe.

Step back as you witness the spectacle of Algano, the Amphibious Lizard Man. Complete with scales and a slimy coat, Algano is sure to challenge your minds boundaries between the possible and impossible.

Finally, our greatest attraction… Mongo the Human Mutant. Grotesquely deformed, one might debate if Mongo is human at all. Completely devoid of all ability to learn and function in the human world, Mongo has known nothing but sideshow life since his birth. Be careful as you approach him however he can be as dangerous as he is unusual.

So come one, come all to the Dark Carnival !!! If you have unquenchable curiosity for the outlandish, thirst for the unknown, and both an attraction and repulsion for the diseased and deformed, we have put together the show for you. Visit our Sideshow of Oddities and we assure you that your mind, your curiosity, and all the beliefs you have ever held true will be questioned forever.

  • Spooky as hell

I was very much pleased by the Dark Carnival. Clearly one of the best haunted attractions in the area. The maze was confusing, yet interesting. It was like the haunted carnival met with an escape room. Few of the jump scares totally caught me off guard (screamed!). Some of the props were incredible. The chainsaw room virtually freaked me out. Generally, the house was pretty dark with lots of surprise corners. Actors were professionals and they stayed in character. My only gripe was that it was a bit short for my liking. Anyways, recommend this place.

  • Fun and scare

It was a fun and scare, a great combo. A long drive and a long wait in the lines did not down our spirits. We were in for good fun and the place did not disappoint. We had classic scares from devilish clowns, armless men, Airbus and aquatic fish boy. They all were looking and acting there part really well. Mongo was an attraction I have never witnessed elsewhere. A human mutant well-presented three us out of gear. They played the tricks really well.

  • high-tech stuff

It was a well put together attraction with great scares, special effects, high-tech stuff, creepy props and actors’ who knew how to scare the visitors. Few of the jump scares really freaked me out. The hallways was pretty dark, and you won’t realize until the scare actor is right in front of you. Honestly, screamed few times. I was holding on to my BF’s hand all the time. The clown room was freaky awesome. I saw some of the grotesque figures that I’d ever witnessed in the Sanatorium. Excellent makeup and costumes. Staff was helpful. It would have been great had it been a little bit longer. Check it out if you’re looking for a haunt priced reasonably. I will visit again next year.

  • Email Verified never boring

It was a blast at the dark carnival; was there with a group of friends. Not an easy one for the faint heart. It had out of the world, imaginative characters. Thanks to the team for putting up such a great effort. It was never boring. The actors played these characters really well. The makeup, costumes were top notch. Special effects made us startle and it was magnificent. There were enough scares and noises that were capable to make us jump and run. Overall the carnival lived up to our expectations.

  • Email Verified Scares in every corner

I’d never thought that the element of fear can be invoked in humans in different ways. The swirling maze had creepy sets, scary props, grotesque characters and some high tech stuff that had freaked us out. More than once my GF screamed. Walking along the hallways in the dark virtually scared the crap out of me. There were scares in every corner.

  • Good decent scare

Went there with a lot of expectation and we got what we wanted. A good decent scare though it was for a short while. Had so much fun. Incredible props, awesome actors and a magnificent set. It was all a heady combo. The entire time they definitely made me scream and laugh. Actors were great as the giant, midgets and the fat lady. There was a three-legged boy too. Characters were all out of the world and makeup and costumes were complete and relevant. It was a great way to spend an evening with your family. Kudos.

  • Email Verified Awesome

This place was fricking awesome. Timing and execution were perfect. The screams in frozen lair of the Pig Man was freaking scary. Sanatorium also had some creepy actors. Their makeup was impressive. I suggest this place to anyone who is looking for some fun scare.

  • Email Verified Best Kept Halloween Secret in Bayville

The woods set back well behind the batting cages at Blackbeards Cave in Bayville NJ sets a perfectly creepy mood for this Halloween Haunt. If pyschotic clowns, circus freaks and dolls scare you this is perfect. Walking in total darkness at times is just as scary as an unexpected "boo!" style scare! The Meat Grinder is also a good addition and you get both scares for only $20! My only criticism is that this local gem is too much of a "best kept secret." It needs to be promoted at local stores, schools and cross marketed at Blackbeards Cave at every venue and opportunity.

  • love to come back

Everything was great, except the lines and wait! Animatronics also played a good role in creating the fear. It was quite exciting and we love to come back.

  • Email Verified Terrific surprises

Both the houses were equally good. Terrific surprises keep popping up every now and then, especially from the darkest corners. We couldn’t stop our screams from start to end. The actors were so much dedicated, some would even follow you from behind to scare you more. Loved their energy, they never seemed to slow down at all.

  • Email Verified Damn frightening haunt

Scary sounds and mysterious ghosts!!! We felt this thrilling adventure at The Dark Carnival. The place was so dramatic, fun filled and magnetic, that we were not willing to come out of scary world. Unique theme and sets were damn frightening. Will visit again in the next season.

  • Email Verified Overall experience is average

Some scares were nice, but the overall experience is very short lived. It just took us around 20-25 minutes to go through the entire place, including both the attractions. And we were charged no less than $25 each. We wouldn't have come this far if we had known this earlier. Really wish they had more space and more props to display.

  • Had super fun throughout

Worth the time, money and the long wait too. We went as a group and they had no problems in sending us all in together. The scare factor did get reduced a bit, but we had super fun throughout. Wouldn’t mind returning again.

  • Email Verified Avoid this

The performances by actors were abysmal. The costumes/makeup weren’t scary and they didn’t try their best to scare any one of us. Avoid this...save your time.

  • Email Verified Never Miss This One...

I visit few haunts every year; Dark Carnival is definitely one that you should not miss. It has great conceptual designs and plenty of scares in the rooms. It also had some incredible props. You can tell how much time they might have spent in designing this place. My GF screamed many times. Actors all did a fantastic job. I heard a lot about this haunt, and it had lived up to the hype. I would recommend this place to everybody. No long line and reasonable ticket prices. Awesome!

  • Real fun at real carnival

For realistic and terrifying fun, me and my partner went straight to The Dark Carnival. And it was out of the world!!! Stress bursting and trilling!! They are very innovative in all categories. I think the concept of Travelling Slideshow launched first here, and it was mind blowing. Mysterious ghosts and dazzling props are added attractions. A must visit place for all Halloween lovers!!!
